Grappling with the phenomenon of climate change while endeavouring to achieve economic growth and alleviate poverty - the Philippines, considered as a nation highly-vulnerable to climatic impacts yet also one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia - faces many challenges to the country’s development path, particularly the ones related to natural resources plus patterns of production, consumption and economic growth. Nevertheless, excellent opportunities to match the efforts for economic growth and poverty alleviation with efforts to improve environmental and social sustainability abound. The challenge involves defining a new ‘green economy’ for the Philippines, identifying and realizing such opportunities to address social, economic and environmental goals at once - particularly business initiatives (sustainable ventures) and activities which improve human well-being and the environment on a triple-win basis (people, planet, profit), contributing to decoupling economic growth and improvements in well-being from natural resource use. This challenge is being addressed through a partnership on Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) and Green Economy between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Climate Change Commission (CCC), as implemented by WWF-Philippines and supported in technical cooperation with UNEP and under the financial support of KOICA. As the implementing partner, WWF-Philippines is working to build the capacities of government agencies as well as business, academic and civil society organizations to integrate SCP and Green Economy concepts and tools into their plans and programmes. WWF-Philippines is also developing fact-based recommendations for the country’s policy makers on moving towards an SCP-enabled Green Economy. |
