Conservation Partner Lafarge The ecological footprint of industry is undeniably great. In many ways, it dwarfs individual people’s contributions for obvious reasons. Contrary to common perception, industries are not oblivious to their effects on the environment. Many are making a conscious effort to reduce their footprint by adopting and implementing measures to help ensure a brighter future for everyone. For over a decade, Lafarge Cement has partnered with WWF to make a difference in the industry and its impacts on the environment. The objective - to formalize a shared ambition to overcome economic, environmental and personnel constraints to reduce the Group's environmental footprint. In 2001, the Group set a target of 20% reduction of its net CO2 emissions from 1990 to 2010. By 2010, Lafarge took a significant step in the fight against climate change by achieving a reduction of 21.7% of its net CO2 emissions. Lafarge has been active in promoting local initiatives in partnership with WWF all around the globe, focusing on these key factors:
In the Philippines, the partnership has worked in the sustainable construction work stream, utilizing tools such as Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to compare blended cement with traditional ordinary Portland cement (OPC). The results of the study provide a foundation to raise awareness in the use of sustainable materials and methods for the construction industry. The project seeks to influence public policy plus industry leaders and players towards more sustainable building and procurement standards. |
