New Conservation Areas Project: Bongao, Tawi-Tawi The New Conservation Areas in the Philippines Project, or NEWCAP, is a five-year project of the Philippine government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), providing an excellent opportunity for the formal establishment of new terrestrial conservation areas by developing new PA models and building capacity for a more effective management of the system. NewCAP looks at two models: the Indigenous Communities Conservation Areas (Mt. Iglit Baco) and LGU declared conservation areas (Tawi-Tawi). Over the past year, the number of NewCAP sites has increased by three. Under the care of UNDP, the same GEF Implementing Agency overseeing NewCAP, a similar program is now being developed for marine conservation areas in the country. A total of seven government agencies and NGOs are part of the development team, namely: the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, the NFRDI and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Department of Agriculture, the University of the Philippines Marine Institute, FIN, Haribon Foundation, Conservation International and WWF-Philippines. |
