Watershed Conservation

Santa Rosa River Watershed Management Project

The Sta. Rosa River Basin Project is a five-year initiative (2008-2012) which aims to sustain the functions of the Sta. Rosa watershed - particularly the production of upstream groundwater in the areas of Silang in Cavite and the prevention of floods in downstream Biņan, Cabuyao and Santa Rosa.

Goals are being attained through the conduct of hydrological, engineering and cost-benefit studies, plus dialogues with key watershed stakeholders to adopt best practices in land development. The project is funded by the Coca-Cola Foundation and aims to protect and uplift the lives of the people within the CALABARZON region.

Ilagan Watershed Conservation Project

A watershed management project in Ilagan, Isabela that started in 2008 and will be completed this 2011. The drive complemented the programs of the Provincial Government of Isabela, Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation, Energy Development Co., Tanggol Kalikasan and Foundation for Philippine Environment to protect and conserve the forests and watersheds of the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park - the largest remaining swath of old-growth rainforest in the country.

Amongst the significant outcomes is the distribution of 18,000 fruit-tree seedlings to local stakeholders as part of a broader reforestation programme. A five-year initiative (2010-2015) now focuses on three components: watershed rehabilitation, stakeholder planning for watershed management and equitable payments for watershed services. The project is in partnership with the Coca-Cola Foundation and focuses on building a platform to preserve the services provided by the Abuan watershed to benefit industries, irrigation farmers, water districts, recreationists, eco-tourists, mini-hydro projects and other stakeholders.
