The Ocean Governance Project is a three-year project (January 2020–December 2023) funded by the European Union’s (EU) Partnership Instrument. Commissioned by the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments), the project is a response to the EU Joint Communication on International Ocean Governance and the Global Strategy for the European Union’s Foreign and Security Policy. It builds on the EU Transatlantic MPA Network Project (2016 – 2019), and aims to establish the EU as a global actor in international ocean governance. By working in two focus areas – South East Asia and the Atlantic Basin – and applying an integrated and cross-sectoral approach the project uses regional and interregional cooperation to restore and protect marine and coastal ecosystems. Furthermore, the objective of the project is to promote networking among MPA managers and strengthen existing MPA manager networks in both regions.
